TOPIC: AN EXCHANGED LIFE
KEY SCRIPTURE: GALATIANS 2:19-21 MSG
"What actually took place is this: I tried keeping rules and working my head off to please God, and it didn’t work. So I quit being a “law man” so that I could be God’s man. Christ’s life showed me how, and enabled me to do it. I identified myself completely with him. Indeed, I have been crucified with Christ. My ego is no longer central. It is no longer important that I appear righteous before you or have your good opinion, and I am no longer driven to impress God. Christ lives in me. The life you see me living is not “mine,” but it is lived by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I am not going to go back on that. Is it not clear to you that to go back to that old rule-keeping, peer-pleasing religion would be an abandonment of everything personal and free in my relationship with God? I refuse to do that, to repudiate God’s grace. If a living relationship with God could come by rule-keeping, then Christ died unnecessarily."
COMMENTARY:
The Christian life is not just hard to live—it is humanly impossible!
It is humanly impossible to love your neighbor as you love yourself. Yet you will hear people say, "Well, God commanded me to do it, so I am trying." When someone spits on you or slaps your face, it is humanly impossible to turn the other cheek. You cannot do that in your flesh. You do not have the natural ability to pray for those who despitefully use you, and turn around to bless and do good to them (Matt. 5:44). You do not have the ability to give your overcoat to someone who just took your coat from you in court (Matt. 5:40). You cannot do it. Your flesh must be crucified so that Christ can live through you (Gal. 2:20).
The Christian life is not a changed life, but an exchanged life. It is not where God comes in and now you have the ability to live for Him. You must learn to totally deny yourself, have no confidence in the flesh, and constantly become more dependent on Him. For instance, instead of gritting your teeth and trying in your flesh to say, "I am going to love this person!" you will pray, "Father, I choose to deny myself. You love them through me." Then just relax and let God's love flow out of you. Instead of saying, "Well, I am never going to be discouraged or depressed again," you will go to the Lord and pray, "Father, this person hurt me, but I praise You that You love me. I choose to meditate on that and let Your love flow through me to them." Just let Jesus start living through you.
It is not a matter of doing your own thing and praying, "God, please bless this endeavor. I want to dedicate it to You." That is the wrong attitude. You should say, "Father, what is Your will for me? What is Your plan? I do not have any plans, any agenda of my own. I am willing to be a street cleaner, dig ditches, or be a missionary to some faraway land. Father, I do not care what Your will is—here I am." When you reach that place of yieldedness to Him, He will tell you what He wants you to do. Then, as you do what God tells you to do, it won't be you doing it, but the Lord doing it through you. You will never have to ask Him to bless an endeavor if you are simply doing what He has commanded you to do.
PRAYER POINT:
Lord, I lay myself afresh before the cross, that I decrease and you increase in me, let the life of the risen Christ be made evident more and more in and through me in Jesus' name.
Amen.
