THE GRUESOME MURDER OF HON.CHRISTOPHHER ELEGHU( WASCO)

The Imo State Working Committee of the Labour Party has received with rude shock and great disbelief the news of the dastard, callous and gruesome suspected assassination of our party's candidate for the Onuimo State Constituency Seat in the Imo State House of Assembly, in the 2023 elections. 

 Hon christopher Eleghu was brutally murdered in cold blood before his wife and children, around 11:00 hrs on Thursday 15/12/2022 in his house at Onuimo LGA, while his murderers also razed down his house and cars, after wickedly snuffing life out of him

We strongly suspect going by the way and manner the perpetrators invaded the residence of our late candidate and executed their devilish mission without making pretences of trying to divert public attention, that his gruesome murder was a targeted politically motivated killing.

Consequently, we are strongly persuaded that Hon Elegu's cold blooded murder has further lent credence to the thoughts and opinions within and outside the Labour Party that, the candidates, leaders and members of the party, appear to have become endangered species marked for suppression and elimination in the country's democratic milieu for committing no other crime than espousing and pursuing a vision which is seeking the rebirth of Nigeria.

Just about a fortnight ago, Nigerians woke up one morning to hear the heartrending story of the invasion of the house of our party's women leader in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna by suspected assassins who shot her dead, while her husband narrowly escaped being killed.

We are appalled and shocked to the marrows that in a supposed democratic setting where the laws clearly conferred inalienable rights to freedom of association, exercising that natural right has now become a ground for extra judicial convicting, sentencing to death and killing of people for exercising their rights.

We condemn in strong terms, the barbaric, primitive, jungle like, ungodly, shameful and highly regrettable acts of using force of violence and death to stamp out perceived or real political opponents, in our considered view it's a glaring proof of the near failed nature of the present system we are operating, but also visibly strengthen the struggle by well meaning and patriotic majority citizens of the country for drastic reconfiguration of the country's socioeconomic and political narratives.

 We make bold to say that the real and present use of violence by political parties who have between them held the destiny of this potentially great nation hostage for 22 years to cow us into abandoning the struggle will never achieve their targeted objective.

Rather than worsening their fate by courting the flaming anger and sword of Almighty God through taking of innocent lives they can't create, we are calling on them to learn from our presidential candidate Mr Peter Obi and indeed,other candidates of our party, a lesson or two on how to play decent, civilized and issues based politics.

The nation's constitution avails that, protection of lives and properties of citizens is the basic responsibility of any responsible government, therefore as a political party whose ideology revolves around justice and fairness, we call on the inspector general of the Nigeria police and the executive governor of imo state to move into action immediately and unravel the perpetrators and killers of our candidate.

This call has become very imminent and we expect the government to act responsively and accordingly, as such will restore confidence and assurances of safety to labour party members and the entire imo indigenes.
